Juventus lead the race to land David Alaba on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, having reached an agreement with the defender.

Alaba has spent 12 years with Bayern Munich and was an integral part of the remarkable Bayern side that stormed to the treble last season, winning the Champions League with a 100% record in the competition.

However, his stay at the Allianz Arena could come to an end next summer. The 28-year-old’s Bayern contract expires on 30 June 2021, and with the club yet to meet his new contract demands, he is poised to be available on a free transfer in eight months time.

Such is Alaba’s quality and experience at the top level, signing him on a free would be a real coup, and he has been linked with a move to both Manchester City and Manchester United.

However, according to Italian news outlet Sport Mediaset, it is Juventus who are the frontrunners to secure the Austrian international’s signature.

The Italian champions are negotiating with Alaba’s representatives and are said to have already reached an agreement with the defender.

Alaba and Bayern have been locked in countless unsuccessful contract negotiations, with the club’s former president Uli Hoeness branding Alaba’s agent a ‘money-greedy piranha’.

Sport Mediaset claim that the player has ‘no intention’ of remaining with the German champions, and Alaba’s move to Turin could happen as soon as January due to the good relationship Juventus and Bayern currently enjoy.

The versatile defender spoke publicly regarding his current contract situation in September as reports of the talks between the club and player turning sour emerged.

“I would like my contractual situation not to be clarified in public,” Alaba said. “Therefore, a few statements and reports from the last few weeks have surprised and hurt me.

“Many of the things that are being written and said at the moment are just not right and not true. I would like to spare everyone involved a public discussion, even if not all details are known.”
